>Fischers strength may have decreased since 1972 yes this was clearly demonstrated in the bizarre 1992 match against Spassky I think Fischers true strength in his >prime was severly underrated due to peoples perceptions of his character through >his behaviour. not at the time was his strength underrated he was hailed as a hero here in the states after his 1972 victory given the Key to NYC by the then mayor Lindsay and appeared on several TV talk shows only since his refusal to defend his title in 1975 and of course his sadly demented statements for the last 25 or so years have people forgotton how invinceable he was during the years 1970-1972 he destroyed Taimanov and Larsen >6-0 respectively and fininshing 5 points ahead of Tal in a blitz tournament now >gives me the impression hes the greatest chess player ever i totally agree no player before or since has demonstrated such superiority over his fellow Grandmaster as Fischer during these peak years during this period he had 20 CONSECUTIVE wins against Super GM's(inclusive of the candidates matches you mentioned above) not only did he incurr no losses but he also did not share a point with a draw its during this period i think that Fischer was the strongest chess player ever to walk this earth..to this very day sadly however by 1997 his mental illness was out of control and i think in 1997 he would not have defeated Deep Blue nor do i think he could have even completed the match normally to its end Steve
