Just a thought: couldn't you still set up specific positions for analysis by using winboard's force mode? You'd just have to create a sequence of moves that results in the desired position: xboard protover 2 new force level 40 40 0 (or maybe some other long time control) post (show thinking lines) easy (no pondering) e2e4 (or "usermove e2e4" if engine requested usermove=1) e7e5 g1f3 b8c6 ... go Michael
