I was once asked why I liked programming. I think the answer is same for why I
like to work on my chess program also.

It is the fun in fashioning something intricate and complicated and later being
able to see it work. It feels very good when you see your program play strong
chess and you know that all the numerous parts within are working in unison and
that every single part of them, every single function was created by you,
written by your own hand.

In short, there is a joy in creating something, and once you have created
something you want to do it again. I like to think that God must have
experienced great pleasure when he/she created the world and we human beings
have inherited that trait in a small way :)
