Just run it. But the crafty program is an engine. It does not draw pretty pictures of the board or anything (sorry, Dr. Hyatt -- the 'display' command does not count) ;-) If you have a chess board handy and know PGN you can play with it that way. Just give the moves as PGN and crafty will respond with PGN. There is a help command in crafty that explains how to run it. A large number of additional engines run in this way. GNUChess springs to mind as an example.
