I spent some time trying to find the critical positions in game number two. At first I thought it might be around move 54, when Pro Deo's score goes down from goes down from -0.53 to -2.40 at 55..Ke7, after thinking no less than 666 seconds. I think Ed will read all kinds of things into that, Pro Deo, brought up too polite to swear out loud when it, he, knows its against the CCC-charter here, finds a way around it and resignedly outputs "666" before its PV. "I am sure he didn't see that before I did, but still I'm going down. Those devilish endings again.. &**$!" Emerging intelligence! As an alternative to 54..Rec8 Gandalf 6.1 would have played 54..Ke7. The eval from Gandalf after this is +0.70 for White, on a Celeron 500 MHZ: 00:56:44.1 0,70 14 248583402 Qf3 Rc4 Re2 Be5 Rd5 Kf6 Rdxe5 Qxe5 Rxe5 Rxe5 Qb7 Ree4 Qh7 c2 Qxh6+ Kf7 Qh7+ Kf6 Qh8+ Kf7 Qh5+ Kf6 Qh4+ Kf5 Pro Deo 1.1 Tactical Engine Vulcan Q1b4 would have played 54..Qf6 Gandalf's final output after this, again on Celeron 500 MHZ: 02:01:47.3 1,12 13 477309940 Qb1 Ke7 Qb7+ Rc7 Qd5 Rd7 Qb5 Qe6 Rxd6 Rxd6 Re2 Kf7 Rxe6 Rexe6 Qb7+ Kg6 Qc7 Rc6 Qxf4 The critical position may have been a lot earlier in the game though. It is mostly a feeling, but 37..g4 may have been a positional mistake. Black's three e,f and h pawns on the Kingside I think eventually become undefendable after this. Pro Deo 1.1 Vulcan Q1d8d plays c3-c2 instead. What I like about this move is that it gives the king a temporary safe haven on the b-file, in case White decides to give a check with the queen. Maybe the c-pawn can't be held but it does tie the white queen down on the c2-h7 diagonal and the rooks for the moment too on the bottom rank. The eval is about a draw and that does not seem so far off. But maybe I'm seeing it wrong. What do other programs think?
