Here's a reference to a paper (in PostScript) on HTN (Hierarchical Task Network) planning: http://www.aiai.ed.ac.uk/~johnl/papers/willmott-tcs01.ps Although the paper's main focus is on go, there are references to chess and to Wilkins' Paradise. Symbolic's planner is based on the adversarial HTN model.
