Are you comfortable letting the matter drop, or would you like an explanation? It does not seem fair to call this a witch hunt. They are searching for the facts, and probably educating people about some dangers along the way. If the author's machine was compromised, then this could happen again, and he should be aware of exactly what happened. It should be possible to determine if the machine was compromised. And if it was compromised then if you sweep this under the rug, then it can easily happen again through the same mechanism. "Witch hunt - An investigation carried out ostensibly to uncover subversive activities but actually used to harass and undermine those with differing views." Witch hunt just doesn't seem appropriate in this context. And don't you think that their CDS (clone detection system) is at least somewhat scientific? It seems to have worked in this case.
