I have only tried it with CA 8 and here it works without any crashes.

When you install the engine, you get a button 'Winboard parameters' when you
select the engine and click on 'edit'. Have you added the needed parameters
here?

'Setboard enabled' is selected
and 'Parameters' set to something like this: w4 rebel.eng
The rest as default.
