1) Similar to Mount Everest, because it's there.

2) Many people like to compete their program versus programs created by others.

3) Many programmers like to push the envelope to discover new algorithms, faster
and better ways to do things, etc.

Why?

(this question was given to students in a Philosophy exam at the University of
Pittsburg in the early 70s, the answer that I've listed below got the only A).
