You forget that Mac OS X currently is a hybrid 32 bit/64 bit OS. Major parts
were rewritten to take advantage of 64 bit, where less processor intensiv parts
are still 32 bit and will gain nothing from 64 bit. That is no problem, because
the G5 PPC64 runs both 32 bit and 64 bit code.

I don't know of any Intel chip that would run such an operating system. Going
back to 32bit after spending lots of money to go to 64 bit would ruin any
company. The Itanium to my knowledge runs only 64 bit.
So if these rumors would be true (and currently there is nothing more than
rumors),we would speak about an Intel produced PowerPC (Apple owns some rights
on these chips together with IBM) or a completley new chipset, that Intel
secretly developped.

Andy

PS: Apart from CPU chips, the deal with Intel could also be about some
completely different type of chips. I e Apple already uses some AMD chips for
its Airpot extreme wireless stations.
