Basically, you are correct. I am rated about 1430 USCF and try to use programs to try to improve at least somewhat, but the programs which are masters and above clean my clock. I can play reasonable against an 1800 rated program. Recently, I have been quite busy and not much time to be addicted. I do think the tournaments with these programs can be very useful; especially for programmers finding bugs, and to see some of the moves these programs come up with. Mark
