Cray Blitz, in the early 1990's was playing at about the FIDE 2500 level, based
on games played against human players in rated (and non-rated) events.  This
does not consider computer vs computer games at all, just cray blitz against
humans...

Chess 4.x was considerably weaker, using considerably slower hardware.  Chess
4.x averaged about 3K nodes per second on the CDC cyber 176, the fastest box
they could run on.  Cray Blitz ran on far faster hardware, all the way up to the
T932 in 1994 with 32 processors.
