Karpov is extremely strong. However, last year was probably his last good year.
Expect him to falter greatly within the next few years. He lost a match to
Polgar in Budapest last year and has been doing poorly in the big tournaments.
He was able to compete for the World Championship and win it for two reasons:

1) He did not have to play a grueling set of candidate matches and so only had
to prepare to meet one of a few players in the finals.
2) Anand plays poorly against Karpov. Some people just have the number of other
people. Karpov has Anand's number, but probably for not much longer.

I would expect that even if Deep Blue was still around, it would go Kasparov,
Deep Blue (at it's 97 strength), Karpov, and Anand in that order. I think that
Garry/DB would be close, one way or the other. I think that Garry would crush
Anand and Karpov since he would not know if they could even draw a game against
DB, so to win the tournament, he would have to pull out all of the stops. I
think that DB would not do as well against Anand and especially Karpov (as Garry
does) since it was designed to play Kasparov. Of course, we will never know.

C'est la vie.
