I fixed all of these problems in Crafty. No more than 16 pieces per side, no more than 10 knights, bishops, rooks, no more than 9 queens, no more than 15 pawns, knights, bishops, rooks and queens total. No pawns on first or eighth rank. Still won't accept a position where opponent is in check and not on move. Etc. :)
