Subject: Checkmate Blindness (or.....Not A Vision Thing)

Hi,

The following position is a mate in two passed to us by a friend recently. It
was only passed to us for the sake of interest, but is useful for our purposes.

It is not part of our suite, but even here, in something so simple the strongest
programs have big problems.

You might say "well it does find a mate".

I put it to you that it is mate in two, not 3 or 5 or any other strange number.

Depth is a relative measurement.

Let's start with something "deep".

[D]4k3/3R1R2/8/8/2K1Nr2/4Q3/8/8 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Deep Junior 8:

1. +- (#3): 1.Rfe7+ Kf8 2.Qxf4+ Kg8 3.Rd8#
2. +- (#3): 1.Rde7+ Kd8
3. +- (13.83): 1.Rd8+
4. +- (13.73): 1.Rg7 Rh4
5. +- (13.45): 1.Rxf4 Kxd7
6. +- (13.43): 1.Rh7 Rh4

No, it is not mate in three.

Analysis by Comet B68:

1. +- (#2): 1.Rfe7+ Kf8 2.Qxf4+ Kg8 3.Re8#
2. +- (30.06): 1.Rde7+ Kd8 2.Qxf4 Kc8
3. +- (24.34): 1.Rxf4 Kxd7
4. +- (24.20): 1.Rd8+ Kxd8 2.Rxf4
5. +- (21.83): 1.Rg7 Rxe4+ 2.Qxe4+ Kf8
6. +- (21.82): 1.Rh7 Rxe4+ 2.Qxe4+ Kf8

Yes it is mate, but in two and not by these moves.
You are showing a mate in three anyway.......

You have company.......

Now I'm getting worried. Best idea is to try something different. :-)

But what? Ah yes.......I know.......

That's what I like about these "deep" positions.

You never really know how deep the puddle can be.
