The entire purpose of a match such as this is to play against an opponent with a known rating. The rating of H6 on a P90 is well established. In a chess tournament, Kasparov probably has a lot of games against opponents that everyone thinks he will beat. Even so, by observing the outcomes we can make extrapolations about the ability of both players from a mathematical standpoint. The purpose of the exercise is not to see who will win, but what the ratio of strength between the two programs is.
