True and Chessbase Engines should play as standalone programs in console mode. Then they too could be tested and in competition would play on the same playing field and under the same conditions as all others. Either that or they are not chess engines. If you follow Shredder's history in detail along with it's various versions, that is a very interesting benchmark. It has used both Chessbase and the UCI protocols. Christopher
