I think no engine should refuse such positions. If you don't allow such positions your engine might also refuse some mate compositions. I remeber one that consisted of a square of white pawns surronding the king in the middle of the board, which probably is impossible to achieve in normal play. For sure there are many more such compositions. Would be very unfortunate to not allow them. On the other side, I agree to check for pieces <= 16 per side, one king per side, no pawns on rank 1 and 8. Also not more than 10 bishops, 9 queens, 10 knights, 10 rooks, 8 pawns. I think this is sensible. As for being in double check, well, my engine will not care how it got there in the first place. regards Andy
