Hi Christopher,

Every years some one bring this point about WCCC (and about CCT too btw). There
is to side to the answer :

First WCCC is not an "AlphaBeta engines competition", but a "Computer chess"
competition. The winner will be the machine that is the best at playing chess.
By machine we mean a computer (hardware) with software (engine) and datas
(Opening book, learning files, EGTB). Th winner will be the best automated chess
entity. Like in car races the winner of a championship is usually the best
car/driver pair. This _IS_ fair. It's just not a engine only competition.

Secondly, there is a reason where you will never find a equal hardware
competition. Supposed we decide that for WCCC 2006 everyone should be equiped
with a PIV 5.5 Ghz. What happen to the program wich is program runs faster on a
AMD? What happen to the engine that is written in PowerPC asm ? What if Hydra
want to join (hydra is partially hardcoded in PCI(?) cards)? What if IBM want to
enter the so long hidden (not destroyed :) Deeper Blue ?

That tournament would be WPIV5.5CC (World PIV 5.5 Chess Champoinship) with the
fundamental emphasis on "PIV 5.5 Chess" not computer chess.
