The results don't really confirm this suspicion IMHO. 1996 and 1997 the event
was won by an amateur. 1999 an amateur tied for first rank.

Last year an amateur finished 3rd in the main event, and one 2nd in the blitz
event.

The professionals have been more successful (this should come as no surprise),
but money doesn't seem to be the main factor.

Also the Open hardware aspect is not only about money (if at all, because I
suspect that the huge systems are nearly always borrowed and sponsored) but also
programming effort and competition. Not every strong program can take advantage
of a parallel system e.g.
