While historically matches have been preferred to determine who is the world
champion, once there was a World Championship Tournament in 1948 in Moscow and
The Hague. It was a five round round-robin among five players: Botwinnik, Euwe,
Keres, Reshewsky and Smyslow (Fine was invited to play but declined).
The validity of this tournament to determine the world champion has not been
seriously questioned, as far as I know, and Botwinnik is recognized as a worthy
champion.
