Greetins all,
"Whatever happened to the Gandalf - Pro Deo 1.1 Vulcan {9i8c} match?", the
attentive teader should say with some proper disappointment at this point.
It's just that I found the Pro Deo 1.1 'Ripley' settings a little more
interesting to try out now. Only two games in that other match were played last
week, I could have kept them in as part of this match, because the results will
not differ spectacularly or perhaps even measurably. But since it was only two
games, I might as well replay the games with the Ripley settings. Anyway the
first round of the second match was won by Gandalf in the second game, first
game Pro Deo managed to draw with Rook against Rook and Knight, without
tablebases, Gandalf has access to five man tablebases and 16Mb buffer.
The match is played on single Athlon 3200+, 200 Mb HT for both engines under
Chess Partner's Engine Research Tool.
40 moves in one hour, then again 40 moves per hour. The programs play from the
Noomen start positions but not necessarily in the same order as in Noomen.pgn

I have been trying to find the mistakes from Pro Deo in this last game. I'm not
a strong player at all, but I did not like very much White taking the knight for
a Bishop with 10. Bxf6. Black gets an open g-file for his Rook aimed at the
castled King. Just by changing the settings I think is hard to avoid this move
being played. Pro Deo 1.1 Vulcan Q1e Athlon plays 10.Qd4, that is maybe a little
bit better.

More normal settings all play Bxf6 whatever I changed.
The critical mistake though I thought may have been 22.a3? This seems a weak
move and moreover I cannot reproduce it in analysis mode. On the one hand, that
is good because the settings are not blame, on the other hand it is bad because
it is not clear why Pro Deo played this in the game. The log shows only an 11
ply search, I will post the pgn with PVs below, in a following post. An 11 ply
search took 122 seconds according to the log and that also seems rather too slow
to be normal. But it could be some kept hash position that leads the search to
a3 in the game. No learning but hashtables are not cleared after each move.
Pro Deo 1.1 Ripley after 21..Bc6, in the game 22.a3? I cannot reproduce the move
and it is not played in a single line in analysis mode.
