My comet.ics looks exactly the same (except of TB_PATH).
Still, it plays whithout book. I have the following files in the comet
directory:

COMET-XB
COMET.HBK
COMET.LBK
COMET.SBK
comet.ics
comet.lrn

Seems like the book files only work with the Winboard version. :(
