Certainly they notice it. I think Fruit 2.1 might be in Blitz about as strong as Fritz 8 (older versions) and Hiarcs 9 and about 50 points weaker than Shredder 9 although it doesn´t use endgame tablebases. Unlike many other Amateur engines it plays well in all three stages of the game. Of course average chessplayers don´t care and use the commercials until it has won a Computer World Chess championship or is leading at SSDF but I doubt this will happen anytime soon.
