Winrar is able to use different compression algorithms for different data. So in the best mode, it will use a multimedia compression algorithm for multimedia data such as images, and ppm for text. As a result, winrar gives the highest compression ratio (That I have seen) for almost any set of data. Winrar command line version is free for both windows and linux, but not the GUI version. Anyhow, winrar is not GPL'd. The performance of compression algorithms depends on the dataset, and before disributing files, it is a good idea to try all of zip and gzip and bzip2 algorithms. You never know, zip files may come out smaller. Happens a lot. Pallav
