Subject: Tournament English Speakers - European

Author: James Robertson

Recently someone posted as message about a tournament between best American
programs and Best European programs. This seems rather difficult to do, so I
decided to do my own winboard-freeware blitz tournament between best programs
from English speaking countries and best European programs. I no of no British
freeware winboard program, so no problems should arise there.

Anyway, here is my list:

English
-------
Crafty 16.4
LambChop 7.10
EXchess 2.41
SSEChessII 2.01
Arasan 5.0

European
--------
Comet 95
TCB 0402
LGoliath 1.40
Phalanx 21
ZChess 1.0

(I am going by the ratings on Djordje's chess page). I expect a Russia vs. the
World result type result, only worse and in reverse. I might as well change
"European" to "World" (no good programs anywhere else), and "Tournament" to
"Cooking Class."

Time control will be 40 moves in 5 minutes, all Hash 4MB, round robin with 5
rounds, every program will play every other program on the other team 4 times.

As for the books, most programs will use their default books. I have downloaded
extra books for Crafty (medium; I have the large too, but that seems unfair),
Goliath, and Phalanx.

I would like to hear anyone's and everyone's comments.

James
