There are a number of strong, open source engines.  Fruit and Crafty, as
mentioned below along with Glaurung, Arasan, Pepito and Phalanx to name a few
others.  With all of these you are bound by the copyright/license as to what you
can do with them

Not strong (maybe 1850 elo) is my program Simon.  It is a bitboard
infrastructure, move generator and xboard interface with a very basic search and
evaluation.  In contrast to the above programs, it is public domain so you can
do with it whatever you wish.
