I think you cannot be asking what it sounds like (because obviously, you want to
look ahead as far as you can).

The other possible interpretation of your question is:
1.  Should I ponder on the move I just made? (depth +0)
2.  Should I ponder on the opponent's move? (depth +1)
3.  Should I ponder on the expected response to the expected opponent's move?
(depth +2)

The consensus tends to be that after you make your move, you assume that your
opponent will make the expected response in the pv and then ponder on that.

It is certainly a little bit speculative, but seems to work well in practice.

Which does raise an interesting question.  If +0 is not so good and +1 is better
and +2 is even better, then what about +3, +4, etc.

I don't think anybody has bothered to try it.
