I have a slighty different opinion. The public as well as the massmedia know
that the 1997 event was spoiled by the ugly relation IBM vs Kasparov. They know
it wasn't about chess but all about profit. People dont like such manipulations,
no matter if in sports or big business.

Basically the Hydra hoax was the same right now. Adams NEVER had the chance to
train with a single game on Hydra. So this has no value at all.

Let me put this in a different terminology.

The fact that IBM or the Hydra sponsors in some petrol country don't know what
chess is all about, namely a sport, an art on the base of over hundreds of years
of experience, is no problem for chess, as long as the money rolls for super GM,
but it's a problem of the massmedia. They simply don't tell the truth or they
take the mere appearence for reality and the truth. Which is mainly the case in
the USA but also in the famous lands of fairy tales in the Middle East.

In Europe people are better informed and this is why such show events have no
influence on chess a all. BTW American GM are still most welcomed to play chess
in the German Bundesliga. But please, you must hurry up and make your
announcements.
