 I've read your post twice, but I must admit that I don't understand
your argumentation entirely, maybe because of my English.
 Still, I think that most people want to get used to one GUI, and want to play
chess in that GUI with as many engines as possible.
 All GUI's have their own twists, bugs, and learning curve
(especially if you become older - I suppose :-))
It can be very time consuming and frustrating to install them separately,
then learn all the features of each GUI ...
 Do you play chess with your friends sometimes? Are you using different
chessboards playing each of them?
 I very much appreciate the efforts of programmers who have their own GUI.
But if one wants to play chess with different engines then one standard GUI
is a far better solution.
 As for clones, even if you write your own original GUI, you could clone
other engines in it.
