One way is to send all the moves of the game so far, so your program can effectively play all the moves in "force" mode, just as if you were making them with the mouse. When xboard has finished sending them, you're ready to go. This is the approach my program uses. The other approach involves (I think) the edit board functionality. This is a bit more difficult to get right, becuase of castling rights etc. It's all in the man pages supplied with xboard, and I think in the zippy readme file as well. Good luck with your program.
