In my experience it's easier for a strong chinese chess player to become strong quickly in International chess, than vice versa. I have seen it in University chess teams. So the article about unknown chinese players playing well is not surprising at all to me. Whether this will apply to the very top elites in International chess/ Chinese Chess is debatable though.
