I'll bet that you could feel comfortable with the characters in about 10
minutes, and soon thereafter you would be able to follow chinese language game
score sheets. Not the commentary, just the moves. It's honestly not difficult,
and it's a part of the aesthetics of the game.

Also I doubt that you would attract more players to the game if you changed to
figurines.
