Q.: Is SMIRF able to import new Shredders FENs and PGNs ? A.: Indeed actual SMIRF could import a whole list of proposed FEN extensions concerning Chess960, and of course the PGNs, which are using them, too. The problematic FEN extension used by the new Shredder (incompatible to X-FEN) is also part of that list. Nevertheless SMIRF always will save and export FENs and PGNs only compatibly to X-FEN. And in all cases that would not be a solution for the related compatibility problems e.g. with other GUIs, game databases, online chess servers and PGN viewers. Q.: Why don't you talk to SMK about it? A.: Of course! That is, why he had all my considerations and thoughts to this at hands in time. But what would you do if being ignored with all your arguments? It has been absolutely impossible to have a compromise into the direction of compatibility. And setting facts by publishing the new protocol has made me talk of it instead of taking it all still silently. Q.: Wouldn't a compatible extension of UCI be impossible? A.: There are detailed proposals I have written making that completely work even without creating a need to switch an engine into a special Chess960 mode. Reinhard.
