I'm not sure about FICS or other free servers, but it's possible to use the
Shredder Classic gui to connect, play, and observe games on ICC so I'd assume
it's possible to connect to free servers as well. The Shredder Classic gui does
have the same problems of the Chessbase interface when connecting to ICC, in
that the TC isn't automatically set in the gui for the TC being played online,
so it's not a good idea to auto accept challenges or to leave the computer
unattended.
