When I used Microsoft Visual C to develop a Windows chess program, there
was no need for multiple processes. The top-level Windows loop interpreted
messages and dispatched to routines based on them, whether it was a
routine to bring up a dialog box, or a routine that gave back a chess move
after calculation.

Don't know about the Gameboy and won't go there...
