Crafty uses its own book on a very advanced >way. Ask Bob. But we probably gonna test the Crafty engine. Maybe you should consider to use Remi Couloms "wbengine", his Winboard - Engine to Auto232 converter, which makes it possible to use (nearly) every Winboard engine like an Auto232 capable program. The advantage of using it would be: no hashtable clearing, Crafty could use it's tablebases, it could use it's own opening book and it could use it's learning algorithms. It works perfectly for Crafty, I tried it with some Auto232-Matches (on two different computers) against Fritz and some other commercial programs. I verified the correct function of "wbengine" using the log-file feature of my own Winboard compatible chess program and the log files of Crafty. Another advantage would be, that Crafty would run in it's "own" environment, because wbengine simulates Winboard, and it does this *much* better than Fritz does. The only big difference to the real Winboard I can see is, that it doesn't send any info about the time left for the program during a game, but that doesn't seem to have any negative effect on Crafty. And, very important too, you could use the original Crafty versions released by Bob Hyatt, instead of using the Chessbase versions of Crafty. Greetings, Heiko.
