Here you have it before you. You claim a practice which is from military. Fine.
But we all know that military means ranking orders. You want to tell me that you
could call a General with simply his last name instead of the polite "Sir"?
Don't fool around here. If you have practice already you MUST know that there
are other possibilities to express your respect to persons you simply dont know.
To those persons you can say "Sir" or "Mr." the latter combined with the last
name. If you are writing here in such a forum, for whatever reasons, you are
responsible for your language which shouldn't directly insult other members with
your first written words. I hope you can agree. Please simply behave. Thanks.

NB that we dont talk about details you never know as a foreigner. But we all
learned at school that a simple Mr. or Mrs. in front of a name is the
appropriate address form. Has nothing to do with brown-nosing. If you like you
simply let out all direct addressing. You can write hundreds of messages without
even mentioning other peopl's names or gender. You then simply talk about
topics.
