Go up one level in this thread
it is true that over the time software made progress too. I am sure Marty Hirsch could EASILY reach the same level or even higher level of strength if he would still work on Mchess. you relate programs that have maybe 7 years difference. I do often try even bigger differences, e.g. testing Mephisto III on 6.1 mhz (1983) versus Novag Diamond (1994, RISC H8 CPU 20mhz, hash-tables) or testing it against my Mobile Nokia 3650 (2002)with Genius1.4 (104 mhz 128KByte hash table). The difference in NPS is very big. Mephisto III is doing 1-3 NPS. It's ssdf-ELO is ~ 1464 while the Diamond got 2091 and the Nokia mobile 3650 (2002) with genius1.4 has maybe also arround 2000 ELO. and ? still Mephisto III shows a very good chess. Why ? Because the search tree it generates is efficient. The only problem the software has is the big hardware difference. the software needs to be adapted to the different hadware level. if you put Mchess on a hardware it was never designed for, it cannot work at its best.
