I've used both Icarus on ICC and ChessClient on ICC and FICS. Both applications have a separate subwindow for messages, including draw and abort offers. Messages are displayed asynchronously, without the forced response required of a message box, and no action is required to 'dismiss' a message or to decline an offer. Accepting a draw or abort offer means pushing a button. Simple, and it prevents the abuse cases that Playchess is apparently vulnerable to.
