yes the diplay screens all became defective over the years and the pieces no
longer visable
it was a touch screen display
in many Savants the actual processor still works but the pieces can no longer be
seen

some Savants still have a working touch screen that can sense the moves but not
display the pieces so by hooking up a special Novag Printer one can still use it
to display the computer's  moves and still play games with it

yes that's  one
there were many..

the Saitek Prisma ,Simultano,Renaissance board with special display module,or
several Radio Shack computers like the 2150,2150l,2250XL..etc.etc

but none of these has large LCD pieces like the ones you are talking about
