I guess you're only partially right about this. I'm quite sure that people try new stuff or even have great ideas but they often fail to implement these ideas properly and the conclusion is that the idea was bad. Even something simple as an Alpha-Beta can cause some headache when implementing it into a chess engine (I confess I had some troubles with that). But you know it will/should work as others have done that before, so it's not too hard to solve that. But if an idea has never been tried before it's completely different as you can't rely on someone else's experiences/work. Roman
