How to get a free chess computer. Well maybe not today but when I produced my computer chess magazine back in the eighties, Mephisto in Germany contacted me to see if I would include their chess computer catalogue with every single issue I produced for the next twelve months. I sent them my advertising rates and to my surprise, instead of agreeing to a cash payment they offered my a brand new Mephisto Exclusive complete with leather case (which I accepted). The same happened the following year, brand new Mephisto Exclusive complete with leather case arrived on my doorstep direct from Germany together with hundreds of Mephisto catalogues. When I inquired the year after if they would like to continue with our little arrangement, I was advised that the manager I had been dealing with had moved on and they weren’t interested in advertising directly with me anymore. So the bubble had burst but I was a happy chappy. Another interesting story from that time was when I was threatened by the not very nice managing director of Conchess that I once had dealings with!! But I will tell you about that some other time!! Just another little note about my magazine. The first person to make an enquiry about it was none other than Richard Lang. From that day, I have had various dealings with Richard and if any UK readers who are reading this and think they might have seen him in Cornwall this week, then you’re correct. He’s there on holiday with his family.
