There is a performance hit for using Wine, but given how strong programs are today and how fast CPUs are, for playing against -- you will never notice the 50 ELO or so strength decrease. Of course if you are just doing engine-vs-engine work, that is not an option for most. Fruit 2.1 runs natively on Linux (i.e. full speed) so use that for a maximum playing strength engine while Pro Deo 1.1 gives a multitude of personalities you can use for variety in challenging a computer opponent at a strength you can decrease to moron level (what I need anyway!) while still having a bunch of different playing styles to choose from.
