In this months Chess Life (August 05) there is an amusing tidbit which makes
this post OT

The HB Global Chess Challenge open tournament was the largest open tournament
ever held with over 1500 human players including 52 GM'S
it was held in Minneapolis this past May

in the article summarizing the tournament the following incident was recounted
by the TD(Carol Jarecki):
(comments in parenthesis are my own)

"A player in the under 1600 section had a tendency to wander off into a dark
corner of the huge convention center(playing site).
the tournament directing staff noticed him in the forth round .he had a cell
phone and it turned out he was communicating with another chess player two
floors up in the convention center.
was this a strong master or even GM sending him moves (in an effort to sandbag
the lower section and take back the $20,000 first prize in this section)?
well not exactly..
Apparently this off site provider of erudition was Fritz 9!

when confronted ,the player ran for his life.
he was never identified as it appears he was using a false identity.his wins
were reversed"

now what really has me very upset about all this is..

why did he not use Shredder???
:)

Ends Justifies the Means Regards
Steve
