GPL is evidently not perfect for chess engines because of the testing phase.
Chess engines are written (most often) by one person, then tested by a group
of independent testers during a longer period. The single programmer himself
cannot play enough tournaments to verify the engine.
But I think that most of us (the overwhelming majority) favour original Fruit
over all it's clones, so the whole licensing debate is interesting only on a
matter of principle. It has no practical importance in this case.
