The way I do this is to dump an XML file.  When I first started looking at
search trees I would then just load the XML file into a web browser and use it
to look at the tree.  After doing this a while I cobbled together some C# code
that I use as an external tree viewer... it has a nice tree control and can
spawn winboard to look at the FEN.
