Shredder used a very aggressive one, using about half of its time for the first 20 moves . Intuition (if this is a word) suggests that this is a good idea. But it didn't seem to work too well in general, as these moves were less relevant than could be expected. At http://computerschach.de/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=300&Itemid=1 Johannes Zwanzger mentioned in an interview after the 3rd round what might be a relevant point ( rough and bad translation): " In an ordinary chess tournament Shredder would be more of a favourite than here, because it can calculate like mad in the first 10 moves and still get a bad position". At least in the Jonny-Shredder game this was clearly true. At some pretty early point in the game Shredder had 9 minutes against Jonnys 18, thus had already spoilt half of its hardware advantage. IMHO - YMMV Peter
