Information has been taken from Computer Chess Reports 1987-88 page 29 and from my own experience.I had the M3 ( two of them) and have the Mxl. I remember Fidelity Electronics of the USA recognized as having the strongest chess machines available. Then Mephisto of Germany started to be a very serious competitor. To counter the attack Fidelity designed hash tables into their programs. This started with the Fidelity Excel 68000.Which was not really a success. The next generation was the FE 68000 MACH11.And this was a very good machine. Mephisto, wanting to penetrate the US market launched the Mephisto Mondial XL. The XL is a Dallas upgrade which runs 20% faster and has no hash tables. It has an attractive plastic board which is very sensitive. It can beat the MACH 111 on certain levels (60m game)and the M3 has hash. The XL is a very strong program and is good at blitz. The XL is a very strong machine which no doubt will trounce all most all 2000 elo players at blitz times. I am supprised no one on this board has spoken about it! How popular was the XL for collectors in the US and how many Xl's were sold in the US??
