See these results from a large book test experiment by M.Koppel (CEGT participant). The test conditions were AMD 2200+ or 2700+, 35+4 or 30+3, 256 MB hash, no ponder, no book learning, no position learning. Shredder 7.04 always played matches against Fritz 8, a total of more than 2000 (!) games. http://miko42.de/dasduell/tabelle.html (table) http://miko42.de/dasduell/duellindex.html (complete description, german) See index lines 01 and 12. In BOTH (!) cases against Fritz 8+Fritzbook, Shredder scored 52.5% with it's own book, but still 51.4% WITHOUT book (and without pos.learning which probably would have improved the score even more, from that 295 games) I wouldn't say that amateur engines are generally dumb, but Shredder is definetely NOT dumb without book.
